Section 6 : General use of prepostions


Preposition of place-- in, at, on, above, over, from

Mira lives in Kolkata. (for a big place like city). 

I live in India. (for a big place -- country)

He is in the room.(=inside the room)

Their house is in Rabi Lane. (street, lane)

We live in a village. (indefinite village)

She lives in a town/city. (indefinite town / city)

The pen is on the table. (touching the table)

The fan is above my head. (not touching) 

The bird flew over my head. (moving) 

The object is on the table/ on the wall/ hanging from the ceiling. 


I live at Durganagar. (name of a village)

We live at Khowai.(name of a small town)

Subir lives at 21, Nazrul Street (Address of house)


Preposition of  Time -- in, at, on 

at-- 

Raja gets up from bed at 5 a.m. /at dawn / at sunrise / at dusk.

Mira sleeps at noon / at night / at midnight / at once/

At breakfast / at dinner/ at desk. 


In-- 

He will come in a month / in a week / in a year/ in 2011/ in 20th century /in the winter holidays/ in the Puja holidays/ in the morning/ in the afternoon/ in the evening/ in the night/ in the day. 


On --

He came on Sunday / on that day / on the 11th June / on Tuesday morning/ on the morning of Tuesday.  


Preposition of Direction-- in, on, to

in = inside 

on = on the border 

to = outside 

Kashmir is in the north of India.

Pakistan is on the west of India.

Japan is to the east of India.

He is on the right / left of me.


Relationship in place :

I am going to market.

The sun shines in the sky.

I am going towards the river. 

He climbed up the hill.

In Kolkata our house is on the road. (very near) 

She is coming from home.

He stood by/ beside him.

Ram came from his room.

The cat lay under the sofa.

The man is in/within the room.

The cat fell into the well.


Relationship in Time 

The doctor arrived after her death.

He lost his father at 30.

He reads English for seven hours daily.

It has been raining since morning/ yesterday.

I will finish the work before Monday.

We read from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m.

The train is running behind time.

We shall go to Darjeeling during summer.

He will be here on Sunday morning.

It is ten minutes to seven.

Ram did not eat throughout the day.

We shall send you the money within a week.

I shall send your money in a week. (=after a week) 



Pair Preposition 

in and into

You are in the room. (inside)

Don't go into the room. (from outside to inside)


between and among

Divide the money between the two friends. (used for two persons) 

Divide the money among three friends. (used for many persons) 


For, since, ago

I had been in Gujarat for a month.

I have lived here since 1992.

I joined the joined 5 years ago.


Till, until, by

I shall wait for you till/until the clock strikes five. 

We get up by 5 o'clock.

Please return my money by the 12the instant. 


Besides, beside 

Besides (= in addition to)

Beside (= near) 

He sat beside me.

Besides water, I gave him some food. 


Since, from 

Since ( to refer to past only)

From ( to refer to past, present and future) 

I have been studying in this school since/from 2001.

I shall work from next morning.

Section 2 :  Rules of Using Indefinite Articles 1.  'A' is used before a consonant:  Example: a dog, a cat, a pen, a table 2. 'An' is used before a vowel. Section 5 : Introduction to Preposition Preposition is a word that shows relation between two words or phrases.  See the sentences below : a) John is sitting on the chair. b) He is in the room.  In sentence 'a', the word 'on' shows the relation between 'John' and 'chair'.
