Chapter : 1 : Tense

Introduction to Tense

 'Tense' means 'time'. In grammar 'tense' refers to the time when some action is done. 

'Tense' is the base of English grammar. All the other contents of English grammar are based on Tense. If Tense is learnt, other contents of grammar can be learnt very easily. So Tense is prerequisite for learning anything in English grammar. 

There are mainly three types of tense: 

1. Present Tense বর্তমান কাল

2. Past Tense অতীত কাল 

3. Future Tense ভবিষ্যত কাল

In English Grammar, each kind of tense is again divided into four parts. They are : 

i. Simple Tense or Indefinite Tense

ii. Continuous Tense

iii. Perfect Tense

iv. Perfect Continuous Tense

Hence, in English grammar there are 12 tenses in total: 

1. Present Indefinite Tense

2. Present Continuous Tense

3. Present Perfect Tense

4. Present Perfect Continuous Tense

5. Past Indefinite Tense

6. Past Continuous Tense

7. Past Perfect Tense

8. Past Perfect Continuous Tense

9. Future Indefinite Tense

10. Future Continuous Tense

11. Future Perfect Tense

12. Future Perfect Continuous Tense

Now forms of different tenses are given below:

1. Present Indefinite Tense

Form : S+V(present form)+ Sth 

[S=Subject, V=Verb, Sth=Something Else]

Example

 i. I eat rice. আমি ভাত খাই

ii. He eats rice. সে ভাত খায়

(If the subject is third persson and singular number, 's' or 'es' is added after the verb.)

2. Present Continuous Tense

Form : S+am/is/are+V(+ing)+ Sth 

Example

 i. I am eating rice. আমি ভাত খাচ্ছি

ii. He is eating rice. সে ভাত খাচ্ছে

3. Present Perfect Tense

Form : S+have/has+V(past participle form)+ Sth 

Examples

 i. I have eaten rice. আমি ভাত খেয়েছি

ii. He has eaten rice. সে ভাত খেয়েছে

(If the subject is third persson and singular number 'has' is used, else 'have' is used. 

4. Present Perfect Continuous Tense

Form : S+have/has been+ V(past participle form)+ Sth 

Examples

 i. I have been eating rice. আমি ভাত খেয়ে চলেছি

ii. He has been eating rice. সে ভাত খেয়ে চলেছে

5. Past Indefinite Tense

Form : S+V(past form)+ Sth 

Examples

 i. I ate rice. আমি ভাত খেয়েছিলাম

ii. He ate rice. সে ভাত খেয়েছিল

6. Past Continuous Tense

Form : S+was/were+V(+ing)+ Sth 

Examples

 i. I was eating rice. আমি ভাত খাচ্ছিলাম

ii. He was eating rice. সে ভাত খাচ্ছিল

7. Past Perfect Tense

Form : S+had+V(past participle form)+ Sth 

Examples

 i. I had eaten rice. আমি ভাত খেয়ে নিয়েছিলাম

ii. He had eaten rice. সে ভাত খেয়ে নিয়েছিল

8. Past Perfect Continuous Tense

Form : S+had been+V(+ing)+ Sth 

Example

 i. I had been eating rice. আমি ভাত খেয়ে চলেছিলাম

ii. He had been eating rice. সে ভাত খেয়ে চলেছিল

9. Future Indefinite Tense

Form : S+shall/will+V(present form)+ Sth 

Examples

 i. I shall/will eat rice. আমি ভাত খাব

 ['Shall' is generally used if the subject is first person. 'Will' is generally used with any kind of person -- first person, second person or third person]

ii. He will eat rice. সে ভাত খাবে

10. Future Continuous Tense

Form : S+shall/will be V(+ing)+ Sth 

Examples

 i. I shall/will be eating rice. আমি ভাত খেতে থাকব

ii. He will be eating rice. সে ভাত খেতে থাকবে

11. Future Perfect Tense

Form : S+shall/will have+ V(past participle form)+ Sth 

Examples

 i. I shall/will have eaten rice. আমি ভাত খেয়ে নেব

ii. He will have eaten rice. সে ভাত খেয়ে নেবে

12. Future Perfect Continuous Tense

Form : S+shall/will have been+ V(+ing)+ Sth 

Examples

 i. I shall/will have been  eating rice. 

ii. He will have been eating rice.
